X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) Training

X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) Training In-Person

Get trained to use the Breakserspace's X-ray diffractometer!

All trainings take place one-on-one or in small groups with a Breakerspace laboratory assistant. Completion of a training session for an instrument will provide one with login access to that instrument via an instrument reservation or walk-ins anytime during laboratory open hours. Completion of one's first training session with the Breakerspace will provide tap access to the laboratory as well as the Breakerspace lounge and coffee machines.

This XRD training provides instruction on the following:

  • A broad overview of how the instrument works and the kinds of characterization they can perform
  • How to prepare samples for characterization
  • Formal procedures to ensure appropriate use of the instrument, including radiation safety instructions
  • Basic instrument operations including:
    • Preparing samples, including a hand-on preparation of a powdered sample and a theoretical instruction on preparing other types of samples.
    • Loading/unloading samples
    • Starting up/shutting down the XRD
    • Transferring data from XRD to desktop
    • Analyzing the data from a qualitative perspective
    • Using the software to identify the compound in the sample
